J. Wiley Horton

Wiley Horton’s practice focuses on patents, trademarks, copyrights, licensing, and trial work. He has obtained over 400 United States patents. He has participated in the prosecution of over 100 foreign patents. He has obtained over 200 United States trademark registrations.


Mr. Horton has prosecuted numerous intellectual property cases in the state and federal courts of Florida, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, Iowa, California, and Oregon. He has tried over twenty cases through a jury verdict. He has conducted numerous administrative appeals before the United States Patent Trial and Appeals Board. He has appeared multiple times before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.


Mr. Horton sits on the Federal Judicial Nominating Commission for the Northern District of Florida. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida, the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.


Prior to entering the legal profession, Mr. Horton worked as a design engineer. In this role he developed guidance and control systems for the U.S. Air Force’s Advanced Launch System, the AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missile, and the AGM-114 air-to-ground missile. During this period he wrote "Current State of Practice in Guidance, Navigation, and Control for Space Launch Vehicles," published by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory. He has also worked as a contracting mechanical design engineer for Motorola, Caterpillar, NCR, American Crane, and Siemens.

Wiley received a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alabama, magna cum laude and his Juris Doctorate from The Florida State University College of Law, with honors.


Wiley is a former Commissioner of the Florida Commission on Ethics and a member of the American Inns of Court. Wiley is the former Chairman of the Florida Aerospace Finance Corporation, a former Commissioner of the Florida Education Standards Commission, a former member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a former member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.


Wiley is married and has a daughter and two sons. He is also a skilled machinist and welder. He enjoys restoring antique firearms and building mechanical prototypes. Wiley is also an instrument and multi-engine-rated private pilot.
